The Best Vegan + Vegetarian Cafés in Mitte, Berlin
Last updated: August 8, 2024
It’s no secret that Mitte is the it girl of vegan hotspots in Berlin. For a fabulous morning of kaffee, kuchen, or whatever plant-based pastry and beverage combo your heart desires, look no further than this blog post.
Frea
This café is low-waste, locally-sourced, and fully vegetarian (baked items are fully vegan though). Their food scraps are composted and turned into fertilizer that is then returned to their local suppliers. How cool is that?! From ingredients nearly all sourced in Berlin-Brandenburg to reusable cloths to wipe your hands in their bathroom, they really take the low-waste crown in Berlin. I also find the prices to be quite reasonable considering all the extra measures they take to be so eco-conscious. Plus, everything is so dang tasty.
I’ve tried quite a few pastries here and have been a fan of all of them. Their Spandauer with vanilla crème is especially amazing, and their marzipan poppy seed twist is perfect if you don’t like overly sweet pastries. Their tomato pastry is just as good and probably my current favorite there. For more variety, go for their house breakfast which is a good size to split between two people. The plate costs €20 and includes croissants, brioche, brötchen, butter, spreads, fresh and cooked vegetables, and hummus. Their baked goods run from €3 to €5.
On weekdays there’s always plenty of seats, and on weekends you occasionally have to wait for a spot if you want to properly brunch, but if you’re just in the mood for coffee and pastries you can order that separately and get a spot quicker.
Huadou Soy Concept Store
This fully vegan café is the place to go to for quality plant-based desserts and coffee in Mitte. Their cakes are gorgeous and interestingly mostly tofu based. You wouldn’t think it though! The cakes are creamy and downright delish. The black sesame tofu cheesecake and pistachio matcha cheesecake are my favorites. The drinks are just as lovely! I like their matcha and adzuki black sesame latte which are both comforting on a chilly day. In the warmer months you can enjoy a few ice cream varieties. Their café is both cozy and modern, and a welcoming place to spend an afternoon.
The Greens
This fully vegetarian and mostly plant-based café has an urban jungle vibe. It’s filled with vibrant plants and located in a quiet industrial area of Mitte. The interior is beautiful, and if you find yourself growing attached to any of their plants then you’re in luck: all their plants are available for purchase. They offer very tasty food, my favorite being their cashew cheese and greens croissant, as well as their lemon rosemary cookie. They’re normally out of most of their snacks by midday so come earlier if you’d like to try more of their food. The drinks, on the other hand, continue to be consistently available throughout the day. They have a few unique nutrient filled latte options as well.
It’s a lovely spot to catch up with friends, grab a bite to eat, or even do a little co-working (they’re laptop friendly and offer free WiFi). This café still feels like a bit of a hidden gem in Berlin, mainly due to their slightly more secluded location.
Café Nullpunkt
This 100% vegan and gluten free café is a gorgeous spot just a stone’s throw from a few Berlin landmarks like Checkpoint Charlie and the Jewish Museum. It’s a nice spot for a coffee, but it’s an even better spot if you come hungry! As a savoury gal, I can recommend the feta and greens sandwich or the tofu egg salad sandwich.
Erchy’s
Erchy’s is a bright plant-filled café home to friendly service and yummy vegetarian and vegan dishes. The interior is snug and homey, and the sidewalk seating is excellent for soaking up some sun on a warm day. They have a few pastry and drink options, plus some solid larger plates if you’re feeling more than a little peckish. I can vouch for their hummus plate which came with crunchy sourdough topped with hummus, cauliflower, carrot, sprouts, and seeds. For €7, I thought the price was pretty decent too.
Caphe Hoa
Caphe Hoa is a fully vegan café and restaurant located on the border of Mitte and Kreuzberg. They have a secondary location that is fully in Kreuzberg, near Görlitzer Park. They’re both wonderful spots serving healthy and delicious Vietnamese cuisine in small and large plates, plus a number of really great drinks. This café is at the corner of a building that absolutely soaks up the sun on a sunny day, making it a sweet place to vibe and enjoy a cold drink, with maybe an order of dumplings for the table.
Their iced coconut coffee is fantastic and I look forward to my first sip every year, it absolutely marks the start of summer for me. I honestly think they have some of the best summery coffee drinks in the city, including creamy orange Americano drinks and mango oat matcha lattes. In the wintertime they have even more treats like their crème brûlée lattees.
Blumental
Blumental is a fully vegetarian café with about a 90% vegan menu. They offer cow’s milk and the option to add an organic egg to dishes as a side, but their main dishes on their own are otherwise fully plant-based. This is a beautiful café filled with natural light, a spacious interior, a well-thought-out color palette, and healthy dishes. Just about any of their entrees will get you halfway to your 5 a Day, and I can particularly recommend their fennel, apricot, olive tapenade, and sourdough plate (trust me it works) or their pea guacamole and carrot on sourdough dish. Plus, they have plenty of scrumptious plant-based cakes to balance out your meal. They also pride themselves in being a low waste joint, and this is made possible through their mighty composting machine Berta which takes care of their organic waste in the back of the café.
It’s a very likable spot, and I’m sure you’ll agree.
Sakura
Sakura is a relaxed neighborhood spot that serves both modest and artisanal cakes in a pleasant atmosphere. Bring a friend and make your way through a few slices. They use mostly seasonal and local ingredients, plus they’re fully vegan.
Brammibal’s
Brammibal’s has taken the city by storm these past few years- and for good reason! They serve up great plant-based donuts and have a seasonal menu that rotates every month, meaning there’s always something new and delicious to try. When in doubt go for their classic cinnamon sugar which always hits. Their cafés are fully vegan and although they mostly focus on donuts, they also have solid coffee and seasonal drinks, plus different locations will sometimes have special offers like soft serve ice cream. If you’re in Mitte I’d recommend the Potsdamer Platz location over the Alex one simply because there’s much more seating both inside and out so you can get a better café vibe.
