Guide to the Best Vegan Cheese in Berlin

Last updated: August 9, 2024

How many niche blog posts can I write about vegan food in Berlin?! So far we’ve got tapas, dessert, brunch, ice cream. . . and now cheese!

I’m not vegan, but I appreciate good food, and it’s an even bigger win for me if it manages to be both sustainable and tasty. The vegan food scene in Berlin has come so far, and I wanted to highlight some of my favorite spots in the city for cheese lovers. Or cheeze lovers. However you prefer.

If I’ve missed a favorite spot of yours please comment below! I’m always looking for more great plant-based eats in Berlin.

Aera

Aera serves up the best vegan grilled cheese I’ve ever had. My friend (who’s my vegan foodie partner in crime in Berlin) and I were basically in awe the whole meal. I don’t know how they do it. The cheese emulated rich and slightly sharp cheddar, and the flavor profile is very layered, I felt like I was noticing something new with each bite. It’s a fantastic grilled cheese, regardless of being vegan or not.

The grilled cheese also has fresh rosemary, and the bread used is sourdough and gluten free. If you have a little extra room they also have a seasonal vegan galette that’s really nice. The one we tried was topped with pear.

Trivitys

If you’re in the mood for a cheesy brunch, Trivitys is your place. Be sure to order their cheese plate which comes with three squares of spreadable cheese, cream cheese, nutritional yeast, more spread, fresh salad, and homemade bread. Spread the cheese on the gluten free bread provided and you’re good to go.

Their avocado toast is also a solid choice. Gluten free bread topped with a smooth fermented cashew cream and avocado slices, then sprinkled with cashew parmesan. Served with a side of beetroot and horseradish chutney, plus sprouts. Delicious!

Alaska

Alaska Bar is one of my favorite vegan spots in Berlin and one of the biggest reasons why are because of their delish cheesy plates. Their almond ricotta is a must, it’s served with grissini, mushrooms, and pesto. The almond feta is also very tasty and served with artichoke. I also always order their carrot lachs plate which is served on smooth cream cheese and bread.

Luckily, Alaska Bar is a tapas bar so you can order a few plates and try a bit of everything with your companions. You just can’t go wrong here.

La Stella Nera

La Stella Nera serves up vegan versions of classic combinations like Pizza Diavola (spicy salami and cheese) or Pizza Margherita (mozzarella cheese). Their Spinaci Bianca, which is topped with mozzarella, ricotta, spinach, and toasted walnuts, might be their cheesiest dish. All of their cheeses are made in house too! My favorite thing to order is their tiramisu. It’s so good!

Vincent Vegan

I’d say Vincent Vegan serve my favorite vegan burgers in Berlin. They have a few locations in the city and around Germany, and the quality of the food is very high for being a chain and fast food place. If you’re looking for something especially cheesy I’d recommend ordering ‘the Cheesy one,’ although my favorite burger there is their decadent ‘Big Veganski.’ If you’re looking for a bit of spice try their chili cheeze nuggets. Yum!

All of their locations in Berlin are in malls, and I’d say the Potsdamer Straße location is my favorite.

Emma Pea

Emma Pea is home to perhaps my favorite mac and cheese in Berlin. It’s creamy, topped with fried onions and green onions, and downright cheesy. Highly recommend! They’re a fully plant-based spot. They also have quesadillas and nachos with cheese sauce on the menu, but I’ve never tried those.

The Greens

I love The Greens, however their offers can greatly vary depending on what day you visit. I’d say visiting within the first few hours of the day is a safe bet to have the most options. Their creamy cashew cheese, tomato, and lettuce croissant is so good and my favorite item of theirs, but I really want to try their tomato and feta croissant next. If you’re looking to do a little work while at the café, they’re also a nice laptop-friendly spot. The café is also filled with plants and just lovely!

Etc.

Let me know if you have a recommendation for me! I’ve heard that Brammibal’s has a pretty good grilled cheese so I hope to try that soon and report back.
